"I
came to Emmaus with the idea that I would be able to use my talents
to help the people I would be serving. I was the high-minded outsider,
coming in to fix any problem my seniors would face. Nothing could have
been further from the truth!
While
I am sure that I have done some good, it is nothing compared to the
good my seniors have done for me. Each and every person I have met over
the past few months has touched me and inspired me to live up to their
example. Many of these wonderful people have lived a large part of their
life already. Now, nearing the end of their lives, some are struggling
with profound medical, financial and/or social problems. Despite such
critical hurdles, the seniors carry themselves with a sense of dignity
that commands respect. I have met seniors, literally surrounded by darkness
and squalor, who shine brightly with an irrepressible, almost serene
happiness that I can only hope to one day achieve."
